Protect Yourself From A DWI Charge

Posted on: 17 December 2018

With New Year's looming around the corner and a plethora of other holidays right behind, you may have the inclination to go out and party with some of your co-workers or loved ones. Unfortunately, an alcohol-induced impairment can become an issue if you let your guard down. Take the time to outline a course of action that will protect you from a DWI charge and provide you with help if you do find yourself in hot water.

Either Vow To Abstain Or Arrange Suitable Transportation

You need to refrain from drinking alcohol altogether if you want to ensure that you won't be placing yourself in harm's way or facing a serious charge, due to driving while impaired.

If you do not wish to abstain from alcohol, now is the time to explore transportation options that will ensure that you are going to be able to safely travel to and from each gathering. Some towns offer reduced or free cab rides over holiday weekends. If this is not available where you live, then reserve a cab and driver for the time that you plan to leave a party and stick to your plans.

A cab driver will not wait on you if you are not ready during the time that has been designated, so make sure that you do not cut yourself short by planning a time when a party is still in full swing.

Do Not Be Coerced Into Switching Your Plans

If you are someone who can easily be swayed and fear that some of your friends or loved ones will try to alter your plans by attempting to get you to ride home with them at a different time than you previously planned, then think about what the outcome could be if you make this choice.

You cannot be responsible for someone else's driving capabilities and an accident can occur, even if the driver does not think that they over indulged during a social gathering. Legal fees, injuries, and court dates could all become part of the equation if you are involved in a vehicular accident that resulted because of an impairment.

If you are not too sure that you will be assertive enough to tell someone no and that you have already made plans to travel home via a cab, then request that one of your closest friends or loved ones look after you and speak up on your behalf if someone tries to get you into their vehicle.

Seek Legal Advice For A Charge

If you fail to take drinking and driving seriously and decide to drive after partying all night, there is a good chance that you will be arrested. If this does occur, speak to a DWI lawyer as soon as you are released from jail. Do your best to keep a low profile and provide the attorney with an honest account of what occurred so that he/she is able to properly defend you during your scheduled court appearance.
